Holi is the cheapest festival to celebrate badly and a surprisingly expensive one to celebrate well. Colours and a speaker cost very little. A rain dance, a water tanker, organic colours, a DJ and a cleanup crew do not — and that is the Holi most societies actually end up running once somebody suggests it in the committee meeting.
Decide the format before you decide the amount
The single biggest cost driver is whether there is water involved. A dry Holi in the courtyard with colours and snacks is a modest per-flat number. Add a rain dance and you have added a tanker, a pump, a DJ, matting, and a cleanup that will take two days. Both are legitimate; only one of them can be funded at ₹200 a flat.
The lines committees underestimate
Colours and snacks are the visible costs. These are the ones that arrive after the fact.
- Water — tanker, pump and the society’s own supply
- Cleanup — the common area, the lift lobbies, the drains
- DJ or sound, plus the power to run it
- Organic colours, which cost several times more than the ones outside the gate
- Matting and barricading around wet areas
- First aid — colour in eyes is the most common festival injury there is
Charge participation, not just tenancy
Holi is one of the few festivals where participation is genuinely optional and highly variable. Flats with small children will come; several will not. A flat rate for every unit generates resentment from the people who stayed indoors. Many societies handle this by keeping the base contribution small and covering the rain dance separately from those who join it.
If you split it that way, record the two streams separately. A single blended “Holi collection” number cannot answer the question the non-participants will ask.
Cleanup is a cost, not a favour
The most common Holi failure is budgeting the celebration and not the aftermath, then leaning on the housekeeping staff to absorb it. Put the cleanup in the budget as its own line, pay for the extra hands, and record it like any other expense. Your staff are not a contingency fund.
